Decide whether you need a bulk workflow

Start with Wix Stores’ native Add Media route
Wix documents a native media route: open Products in the site dashboard, choose the product, select Add Media, then add the images or GIFs. It also provides product-media editing and a way to connect media with product options. [1]
That native route is the right first choice for small, occasional updates. Use a bulk matching process when the preparation work has already been done and the time-consuming part is repeatedly finding the right product for each file.
Important distinction: Wix help describes connecting media to product options, while the supplied Backlip source code attaches uploaded media to the matched product. This guide deliberately does not claim that the Backlip Wix app assigns a separate media image directly to every variant.
Choose one matching method for the batch
Select one method before preparing filenames. Do not mix SKU, product ID, and handle/slug in the same run unless you split them into deliberately separate batches.

Use the method that gives the clearest one-to-one relationship. The most convenient-looking field is not always the best one. For example, a short SKU may be less reliable than a unique product ID; a product title is not a substitute for a handle/slug.
Name your files to plan the image sequence
The Wix uploader reads files in either of these forms:
identifier.extension
identifier.orderIndex.extension
When a file has no order index, the workflow treats it as order 0. When a number appears immediately before the final extension, that number is used as the planned sequence position.

Using .0, .1, .2, and so on makes the planned order visible before the batch starts. It does not replace a post-upload review: open the final product gallery and confirm the first image and sequence on the live site.
Validate the folder before matching
The inspected Wix application validates the file type, filename extension, and file size before it enters the batch. The current app configuration accepts JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP and sets a 10 MB maximum per selected image. Run Match All, then correct the exceptions
The bulk workflow should be treated as a review queue, not an automatic publishing command. After selecting the folder, use Match All to look up the product records. The match table shows the file, identifier, planned order, and product match status.

The manual product picker is useful for exceptions. It is not a reason to accept a poor file-naming convention. If a recurring group of files needs manual correction, stop and fix the underlying identifiers before the next catalog run.
Advanced Wix note: matching a legacy catalog by a variant SKU
Some Wix catalogs use a legacy catalog version in which a standard SKU search is product-level. In those cases, the Backlip dashboard can show Include Variant SKUs (Slower) when SKU matching is selected. This option loads the relevant catalog data and scans variant SKUs, so it is slower than the normal path.
Use it only when all of the following are true:
- The dashboard displays the option.
- The product is not found through its normal product-level SKU.
- The image file must identify the product through a known variant SKU.
- You are prepared to use Match All and wait for the catalog-wide matching pass.
Do not generalize this rule to every Wix store. In newer Wix catalog versions, the app uses a variant-aware SKU search directly. The correct public guidance is therefore conditional: use the slower legacy option only if your dashboard offers it and a normal product-level SKU match does not solve the task.
Add Images versus Overwrite Images
Add Images is the safer starting point. It keeps the current gallery and attaches the new matched media, leaving you free to review the result before deleting anything intentionally.
Overwrite Images should be treated as a controlled, destructive action. It is not a shortcut for “refresh every product safely” until it has been tested against the exact batch shape you plan to use.
Pre-publication caution: Static source review found that the current Wix overwrite flow requires a multi-product regression test before it can be described as a guaranteed per-product replacement action. Until that test is complete, use Add Images for multi-product batches and treat overwrite as a one-product controlled test only.
A safe operating sequence is:
- Keep the original image folder and a record of the affected products.
- Match and upload a small Add Images test batch.
- Check the result in the Wix product gallery and storefront preview.
- If replacement is required, test Overwrite Images on one low-risk product.
- Do not extend overwrite to many products until the expected behavior is verified in a test store or controlled merchant catalog.
Keep the Wix dashboard open until results are complete
The Wix upload flow prepares a media upload, attaches it to the matched product, and records success or error results for each file. Keep the dashboard tab open while the run is in progress. The visible result summary matters: a partial batch should lead to a small, corrected follow-up rather than a blind repeat of every file.
After the upload, review several affected products on the published or previewed site.

Troubleshooting
A file says “No match”
Confirm that the file uses the selected identifier type. A handle batch needs the product’s Wix slug/handle, not its display name. A product-ID batch needs the full Wix product ID. Correct the identifier in the table, search for the intended product with the picker, or rename the file and run the match again.
My SKU exists, but the product was not found
First confirm that the SKU is attached to the correct Wix product or variant. If the dashboard exposes Include Variant SKUs (Slower) and you are using a legacy catalog, enable it only when the image needs to find a parent product through a variant SKU. Then use Match All rather than single-file Match.
Several files need manual corrections
Pause the batch. Manual correction is suitable for a small number of exceptions, not a systemic naming problem. Compare the source folder with a Wix product export or current product records, select a more stable matching field, and restart with a smaller test set.
The files are in the wrong gallery order
Check the numeric segment immediately before the extension. Use .0 for the planned first image, .1 for the next, and so on. Then verify the final gallery directly; product-page presentation can also depend on the selected Wix layout. [1]
A file was rejected before matching
Check its actual format, extension, and size. The current app validation accepts JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP and caps a selected file at 10 MB. Re-export a large or incorrectly named file rather than merely renaming its extension.
Should I use Overwrite Images for a catalog refresh?
Not before a controlled test. Use Add Images to validate the matching and gallery order. Treat Overwrite Images as destructive and limit it to the tested case until the expected behavior is verified for the number of products and existing images involved.
